By chance someone gave me some addresses in Rhodesia. Yes, the rebel state! Schools there were very interested. I chose a place at Marondera 50 miles from Harare. There followed three fascinating years. Of course there was a demand for French. Travels took me to South Africa, Mozambique and even camping on an island off Mozambique. I went to Mauritius and Madagascar, where they speak French. Back in Rhodesia a few words of Shona always helped when meeting the locals. St Bartholomews in Newbury, where I did teaching practice, offered me a job to teach French and German.
Foreign languages struggle in NZ. I thought there might be a market for Mandarin Chinese, but this never eventuated. In I did a Dip. From to I worked in several schools for special needs boys in Hong Kong. They had all been in trouble with the law. The first thing I learnt at school was Cantonese swear words.
Very colourful stuff! From the staff I picked up useful expressions in Cantonese. Later whenever I spoke to these lads in Cantonese, they always listened respectfully. Ah, the magic of language! While in HK there came an opportunity to give language courses in prisons. A welcome email is on its way. If you don't see it, please check your junk folder.

I kept my construction job, slinging wood, banging nails, and did the show in the mornings. I loved it, and kept slugging away. His lucky break came in his pairing with Fiona Forbes, an on-air relationship that continues to this day. The show was still called Daytime, but when Rogers and Shaw did their historic asset swap in , Shaw took control of the show, renamed it Urban Rush and vaulted Eckford and Forbes into Vancouver media royalty.
Then last year, he started filling in for Loverboy frontman Mike Reno when out-of-town gigs would mean Reno would have to miss his co-hosting duties with Jake Edwards on the Rock weekday morning show.
If you ever get a chance to go out for dinner with him, take it. When Reno received word that would see a major tour of Loverboy, it was only natural that Eckford slid into the morning drive-time seat full time. Quite the opposite, in fact.
It drives like a real luxury sedan, but when you push it, you can feel it settle in the rear and really hug the ground. It was massive, and when he gave it to me, he included a VHS tape of an ad that Guy Lafleur had done for the Monte Carlo back in the day.
But when it ran, and you had a day like today, blue sky and sunshine, it was a little slice of heaven. I got a Ford F flatbed. Yeah baby! It came from a mine in Winnipeg, and this thing had worked hard. It was indestructible. It was an awesome vehicle. It runs like the day we got it. We love the BMW 6 Series, the cabriolet.
