Melon, tomato, pineapple and apple or pear slices are some fun fruit choices. Try fruits and vegetables such as apples, pumpkin, grapes, carrot, parsley, broccoli, mango, sweet potato, squash, and spinach. Feed the fruits and vegetables to your budgie raw, because cooking takes away vital nutrients.
Give Your Budgies Banana Peels Some budgies love eating banana peels, which are still good for the health of the birds. Once you peel off the skin of the banana, do not throw away the peels. Put the banana peels inside the cage of your birds. Some budgies might prefer the banana peels. Parakeet Fruit and Vegetables Always offer fruit and veg raw.
If, at first sight, the fresh food makes the birds wary, persevere. Parakeets enjoy eating fresh fruit. One way to find out what types of foods your bird likes is to give them a bowl filled with a variety of different fruits. If they eat certain pieces while ignoring others, give them what they like. Your parakeet might get bored from getting the same meal every day, so mix things up with a fruit kabob or dangle them inside their cage to make eating more exciting.
Parakeets are also big fans of warm fruit, so pop their meal in the microwave before giving it to them. Make sure that if you feed your bird any cooked food to wait for it to cool first before serving it to them; human food is served hot, and while we can tolerate a certain heat, parakeets can get seriously burned.
Are there any foods that are normally healthy that become do-not-feed for birds in certain conditions? Pet birds that suffer from candidiasis should not consume any sugar during their treatment because the yeast nourishes on it.
Fructose is the same as sugar, so fruit is not allowed. Birds with avian gastric yeast may vary in whether they can eat fruit depending on the treatment they are given. How often do parakeets eat? Parakeets tend to eat about a pound of birdseed each month. This is around 3 teaspoons a day. However, this can be different depending on their age and their overall health.
If you think your parakeet is over or under eating , you might want to consult a veterinarian. Red or green are fine. Serve them with the skin on or off. You can offer them to your budgies in a number of different ways. Different sizes cut up in a food tray or plate is one option. I prefer to offer large chunks, either skewered onto a nail on a branch in the cage or hung from the cage wire using one of these clips. A really important point before feeding your budgies apples is to remove the seeds.
They contain cyanide which is toxic to budgies. Other types of melons are more firm and you can offer them in trays, hung on food clips or try hand feeding some honey dew or cantaloupe if you have a tame budgie. Kiwi fruit, or kiwis, are those small green fruit with a furry brown skin and little black seeds.
These are great for budgies because you can just cut them in half and feed them straight to your your birds, skin and all. Clip the halves onto the cage with a food clip, skewer them onto a nail or make them into a fruit kebab to hang from the roof or a perch. As with apples any variety or colour is fine. Serve up some fresh orange slices for your budgie to give them an occasional treat, especially on hot days.
Oranges are great because they provide a good source of natural vitamins and they hold a lot of water, which helps keep your budgie hydrated in warm weather. Oranges are best served in slices. Cut the oranges into quarters and slip them into the bars of the cage or attach them to the inside with a food clip. Lemon slices have all the same benefits for your budgies as oranges. As with oranges only offer lemon occasionally to prevent stomach upsets and diarrhoea caused by citric acid.
Simply slice a mango in half removing or cutting around the large seed and offer the whole slice on a tray or plate.
