Hundreds of miles of groomed trails and thousands of miles of pristine rivers and streams traverse numerous mountains and lakes. Hitting the trails is a good way to take in the spectacular scenery of Shasta Lake.
Hiking, biking, driving, even horseback riding offer sightseers and nature watchers an excellent way to see the area's beautiful flora and fauna up close. One of the top lake viewing spots here is at Sundial Bridge on Turtle Bay. Mountain climbers will be in for a treat at Shasta Lake. The area is home to several mountain ranges and features Mount Shasta, a dormant volcano with an elevation of 14, feet.
The mountains are enjoyable in the winter, too, as downhill skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobile riding are allowed in the area. Shasta Lake Cavern lets visitors discover the underground wonders of Shasta, and is a favorite hike. Fishing and hunting at Shasta Lake are fantastic. Anglers will find several species of trout and salmon in the many rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds in the area, as well as smallmouth bass, catfish and crappie.
Those who prefer to shoot wildlife with a camera, as well as those who just like to take in the magnificent views, will find plenty to see. Big game such as black bears, deer, elk, and antelope can be found here, as well as fowl including quail and pheasant. Coleman National Fish Hatchery, located near the mouth of Battle Creek where it joins the Sacramento River, was built in to offset the loss of anadromous fish that could no longer reach their spawning grounds upstream of Shasta.
It is the only hatchery in the world that raises winter-run chinook salmon and is one of two captive brood stock programs for Delta smelt in California. Today, there are three types of migratory barriers to anadromous fish within Battle Creek: natural waterfalls, hydroelectric diversion dams, and the Coleman Hatchery weir.
Reclamation made numerous operational changes. A temperature control device on the upstream face of Shasta Dam releases varying amounts of water from three depths to a maximum depth of feet to maintain favorable downstream temperatures for spawning fish. Other actions include closing the Delta Cross Channel gates for several months to keep migrating salmon in the river channel. Raising the dam Opponents say the amount of water made available by raising the dam is not worth the ecosystem costs —flooding of canyons and endangering wildlife and habitat —and further loss of sacred tribal ground an issue unresolved from the original construction.
The state of California went to court in to block CVP contractor Westlands Water District from assisting in the planning and construction of a dam raise. As the investigation progresses, Reclamation plans to continue related work on environment, water rights and Native American and cultural resources.
